Versailles (/vɜːrˈseɪlz/ VUR-saylz) is a city in the state of Missouri, United States. It is the main town, also known as the county seat, of Morgan County, Missouri. In 2020, about 2,539 people lived in Versailles. The city's name comes from a famous royal palace in France.

History of Versailles, Missouri
A post office opened in Versailles in 1835. The city itself was officially planned out in 1854. Its name was chosen to honor the famous royal palace in France.
Historic Buildings and Events
The Martin Hotel was built in 1853. Many important people stayed there, including the famous showman P. T. Barnum. Today, the Martin Hotel is a museum.
The Morgan County Courthouse is another important building. It was designed in a French style. Both the Martin Hotel and the courthouse are listed on the National Register of Historic Places. This means they are recognized as important historical sites.
Every year, Versailles hosts a fun event called the Old Tyme Apple Festival. It usually takes place on the first Saturday of October.
Past Industries
For many years, the Dixon Ticonderoga company had a pencil factory in Versailles. However, the factory closed down in 2005.

Versailles is located in the eastern part of Morgan County, Missouri.
Roads and Travel
Two main roads pass through the city. Missouri Route 5 runs along the western and northern sides of Versailles. It goes north to Tipton and south to Camdenton. Missouri Route 52 joins Route 5 on the north side of the city. Route 52 leads southeast to Eldon and west to Stover.
Land and Water
The city covers an area of about 2.40 square miles (6.04 square kilometers). A very small part of this area, about 0.004 square miles (0.01 square kilometers), is water. Versailles sits on a raised area of land called a ridge. Water from the north side of the ridge flows into the Straight Fork, which is part of the Moreau River system. Water from the south side flows into Little Gravois Creek, which is part of the Osage River system.
