Muhammad Hasan Akhund Kakar (born between 1945 and 1958) is an Afghan politician and religious leader. He is currently the acting prime minister of Afghanistan in the Taliban government. He took on this role on September 7, 2021.
Akhund is one of the people who helped start the Taliban group. He has been a very important leader within the movement for a long time. In the first Taliban government, from 1996 to 2001, he worked as the deputy foreign minister.

About His Early Life
Akhund comes from southern Afghanistan. He is part of the Kakar tribe, which is a group of Pashtuns. Records from the UN Security Council show he was born in a place called Pashmul. At the time, Pashmul was in Panjwayi District. Today, it is in Zhari District, located in Kandahar Province of the Kingdom of Afghanistan.
The UN has two possible timeframes for his birth year. They estimate he was born either around 1945–1950 or around 1955–1958.
His Education and Studies
Hasan Akhund studied in different Islamic schools in Afghanistan. These schools teach about the Islamic religion. Unlike many other Taliban leaders, he did not fight in the Soviet–Afghan War.
His Political Journey
Hasan Akhund is one of the oldest members of the Taliban. He was a close friend and helper of Mohammed Omar. Omar was the very first leader of the Taliban movement.
Roles in the First Taliban Government
During the Taliban's rule from 1996 to 2001, Akhund held important positions. He was the Deputy Prime Minister. He also served as the foreign minister of Afghanistan. He held the foreign minister role from 1998 until October 27, 1999. Like many other senior Taliban members, he is on a list of people the United Nations has placed restrictions on.
During the Period of Conflict
From 2001 to 2021, during a time of conflict in Afghanistan, Akhund was sometimes a member of the Quetta Shura. This was a council of Taliban leaders. In 2013, he was in charge of the Taliban's different committees. He also led the group responsible for finding new members.
Becoming Prime Minister
After the Taliban returned to power in 2021, Hasan Akhund was chosen as the interim Prime Minister. His appointment was seen as a way to bring together different groups within the Taliban. He officially started his role on September 7, 2021.

Hasan Akhund has written several books about Islam. According to BBC News, he is more important for his religious influence within the Taliban. This is different from those who focus on military actions. An expert from the United States Institute of Peace suggested that he is more of a political figure.
