Mohammad Hasan Akhund (born around 1945–1958) is an Afghan mullah and politician. A mullah is a religious leader or teacher. He is a leader in the Taliban group. Currently, he serves as the acting prime minister of Afghanistan. He took this role on September 7, 2021. His government is not officially recognized by all countries around the world.
Akhund is one of the people who helped start the Taliban. He has always been a very important leader in the group. When the Taliban first ruled Afghanistan (from 1996 to 2001), he was the deputy foreign minister. This means he helped manage Afghanistan's relationships with other countries.
Early Life and Education
Mohammad Hasan Akhund grew up in southern Afghanistan. According to information from the United Nations Security Council, he was born in a place called Pashmul. At the time, Pashmul was in Panjwayi District. Today, it is part of Zhari District in Kandahar Province. This area was once part of the Kingdom of Afghanistan. The United Nations has two ideas for his birth year: either around 1945–1950 or around 1955–1958.
He studied in different Islamic schools in Afghanistan. Unlike many other Taliban leaders, Akhund did not fight in the Soviet–Afghan War.
Political Career
Akhund is one of the oldest members of the Taliban. He was a close friend and helper of Mullah Omar, who was the first leader of the Taliban. During the Taliban's rule from 1996 to 2001, he had several important jobs. He was the Deputy Prime Minister. He also served as the foreign minister of Afghanistan from 1998 to October 1999. Like many other senior Taliban members, he was placed on a list of people with restrictions by the United Nations.
After the Taliban lost power in 2001, they began a period of fighting called the Taliban insurgency. During this time, Akhund was sometimes a member of the Quetta Shura. This was a leadership council for the Taliban. In 2013, he was in charge of the Taliban's different committees. He also led the group that found new members.
When the Taliban returned to power in 2021, Akhund was chosen to be the temporary Prime Minister. His appointment was seen as a way to bring together different groups within the Taliban. He officially started his job on September 7, 2021.
Additional Information
Mohammad Hasan Akhund has written several books about Islam. News reports from BBC News say that he is more important for the religious side of the Taliban. This means he focuses more on religious guidance than on military actions. An expert from the United States Institute of Peace also said that Akhund is more of a political person.
