Hassan Diab (born June 1, 1959) is a Lebanese professor, engineer, and politician. He served as the prime minister of Lebanon from January 21, 2020, to September 10, 2021.
President Michel Aoun chose him in 2019 to take over from Saad Hariri. Mr. Diab resigned on August 10, 2020, after a big explosion in Beirut. He continued as a temporary prime minister until Najib Mikati formed a new government. Before becoming prime minister, he was the Minister of Education from June 2011 to February 2014.

His Early Life and Schooling
Hassan Diab was born in Beirut, Lebanon, on June 1, 1959. He studied communications engineering at Leeds Metropolitan University. He earned his bachelor's degree in 1981.
Then, he got a master's degree in systems engineering in 1982. This was from the University of Surrey. In 1985, he completed his PhD in computer engineering at the University of Bath.
His Work as a Professor
Mr. Diab spent many years working as a professor. In 1985, he joined the American University of Beirut (AUB). He taught electrical engineering there.
He has written over 150 articles and papers for science journals. He also wrote books about making education better in Lebanon. From 2006 to 2011, he was a vice president at AUB.
In June 2011, he became the Minister of Education and Higher Education. He served in this role until February 2014.
Becoming Prime Minister
Hassan Diab was chosen to be the next prime minister on December 19, 2019. This happened during protests that led to the previous prime minister's resignation. Many members of the Lebanese parliament supported him.
He was an independent politician. This means he did not openly support any specific political group. He was not very well-known to the public before his appointment.
Lebanon's new government was formed on January 21, 2020. Mr. Diab announced a new cabinet with twenty members. These members were experts in their fields, called technocrats. They promised to work on new election laws and fight for an independent judiciary.
Diab said his first official visits would be to countries in the Arab region. He signed the country's budget for 2020, which cut spending. In March 2020, he announced that Lebanon would not be able to pay back its sovereign debt for the first time.
After a large explosion in Beirut in August 2020, Diab's government declared a state of emergency. This gave the military more power in the city. People were very angry at the government. They felt the government had failed to prevent the disaster.
On August 8, 2020, many protests took place. Mr. Diab said that Lebanon needed early parliamentary elections. He proposed a bill for this to his cabinet. Before the meeting, some ministers resigned.
On August 10, 2020, Hassan Diab officially resigned as prime minister. He continued to serve as a temporary leader until a new government was formed.

Hassan Diab is married to Nuwar Mawlawi. They have three children together. He is a Sunni Muslim.
