History of Haubstadt
Haubstadt was first called Haub's Station. This name means "Haub town" in German. The town was planned in 1855. It was named after an early settler, Henry Haub. The town officially became a town in 1913.
Early Settlements and The Log Inn
Henry Haub built the first home in the community. It was a special building for travelers. It had a stagecoach shop, a general store, and a trading post. This helped people traveling on the Noon Day Stage Coach route. Later, a dance hall was added above Mr. Haub's tavern and store. This building became known as The Log Inn. It is famous for being the oldest restaurant in Indiana.
The Haubstadt State Bank building is also important. It is now the Town Hall. This building was added to the National Register of Historic Places in 1984. This means it is a special historical site.
The 1990 Train Accident
On June 14, 1990, a train had an accident in Haubstadt. It was around 7:00 PM when the train went off its tracks. There was a loud crash and a bright flash. The power went out across the whole town. Many people quickly realized what had happened.
The accident destroyed several buildings. Much of the downtown area was damaged very quickly. People were worried because they thought the train might be carrying dangerous chemicals. Many residents, especially those with breathing problems, left town. It was later found that the chemical cars were empty. The smell was just leftover residue.
Investigators found that the train tracks were not in good condition. Some parts were loose. The speed of the train also played a role. Trains often travel fast through Haubstadt. Some people in Haubstadt and nearby towns worry about future accidents. This is because the train speed limit was increased in 2000.
