The Story of Cassie Palmer
This is the story of 13-year-old Cassie Palmer. She lives with her mother, older brother, and sister. Cassie's mother is a "psychic" or medium. This means she claims to talk to spirits.
One day, some of her clients get very upset. They find out Mrs. Palmer tricked a woman. She made the woman think she was talking to her dead husband. Mrs. Palmer did this by brushing the woman's face with a feather. The clients threaten to report her. Mrs. Palmer begs them not to. She says it would make her homeless.
Mrs. Palmer tells Cassie that her powers are not always strong. So, she sometimes has to make things up. This is to give clients the results they want. Mrs. Palmer also explains something special about Cassie. She says Cassie is the seventh child of a seventh child. This means Cassie will have great psychic powers when she grows up.
However, Cassie does not want to be a psychic. But, her special abilities have already started. Cassie just doesn't know it yet.
Cassie Meets Deverill
Cassie wants to protect her mother from trouble. So, she goes to a cemetery. She tries to call up the spirit of a child named Charlotte Webb. Instead, a dark figure appears from behind a tombstone. He tells her his name is Deverill. He asks why she called him. Cassie gets scared and runs away.
Cassie eventually tells her mother about Deverill. Her mother becomes very worried about their safety. Deverill appears to Cassie several more times. But only Cassie and her mother can see or hear him. Cassie is not sure if Deverill is good or bad. She invites him to her house. She hopes her mother can find out what he wants. He comes, but he vanishes before her mother can understand his intentions.
A New Home and a Restless Spirit
Eventually, the Palmers have to sell their house. They move to another town. This happens because Mrs. Palmer's business is bad. Her reputation was hurt by the clients who accused her of tricking them.
Deverill then tells Cassie a secret. When he was alive, he buried a small treasure. It was hidden in the floorboards of a house in town. Cassie finds the treasure. She is able to use the money to buy a new home. This helps her, her mother, and her siblings start a new life.
Because Cassie helped him, Mr. Deverill can finally leave this world. His restless spirit is freed from darkness. Cassie's psychic powers seem to disappear after this struggle. This allows her to live a normal life, free from supernatural influences.
