What the Story is About
The Mysterious Grinnygog
The adventure begins when a strange stone statue, known as the Grinnygog, falls off a truck. This truck was moving stones from an old church. A woman finds the statue on her way home and decides to take it. She gives it to her elderly father to put in his garden as a decoration.
Strange Feelings and New Arrivals
Once the Grinnygog is in their garden, the family starts to feel unusual. One young boy, in particular, feels very happy and wants to try out old folk magic spells. At the same time, a nervous and lost-looking child appears around town. This child seems to be from another time or place. Also, three quirky older women arrive in town. They seem to be looking for something important. They bring with them a "daughter," who turns out to be a mannequin (a life-sized doll). But at one point, this mannequin seems to walk by itself!
Witches from the Past
The story slowly reveals a big secret: the three older women are actually witches! They are from England's Middle Ages, hundreds of years ago. They escaped a witch-hunt (when people were unfairly accused of being witches and punished) by somehow traveling through time to the modern day. The Grinnygog is a special kind of familiar spirit (a magical helper). It was asleep until it was moved from the church. Then, it woke up and called the witches to the present time.
One of the witches is desperately looking for her daughter. Her daughter was separated from her during a terrible witch-burning event that happened hundreds of years ago in the same town. The daughter also escaped by slipping through time, but she only appears sometimes and is lost without her mother.
Solving the Mystery
A group of children in the town eventually figure out the truth about the witches and the Grinnygog. They investigate their town's history and learn that the town needs to make up for the old injustice of the witch-burning. One important clue comes from an old book written by a town elder. He saw the witch-burning and wrote about it in his journal. However, he died before he could share the final clue about the escaped witches.
Another clue arrives with an African witch doctor named Mr. Alabaster. He has come to find the witches and help them. The story ends happily. The witches are reunited with the lost daughter. Mr. Alabaster takes them and the Grinnygog to a safe place where they can live without fear.
