The Witches and the Grinnygog is an exciting children's book written by Dorothy Edwards. It was first published in 1981. This novel was so good that it was even considered for a special award, the Whitbread Prize, for the best children's book that year.

The story explores old traditions from before Christianity, which some people in the Middle Ages mistakenly thought were witchcraft. It shows how these ancient ideas might still exist in our modern world. The book also dives into interesting topics like English folklore, mysterious ghosts, and strange "time slips" where characters might briefly experience a different time period.

What the Story is About

The adventure begins when an old English church is moved to a new place. During the move, a very important stone statue, called the Grinnygog, goes missing!

A woman accidentally finds this strange statue. She doesn't know how important it is. So, she gives it to her elderly father. He puts it in his garden, thinking it's just a funny garden gnome.

Soon after, three unusual old women arrive in the town. They seem to be searching for something very old that was lost or hidden many years ago. Their arrival hints that the Grinnygog might be more than just a garden decoration.
