The Story of The Third Eye
The Third Eye first came on TV on January 8, 1983. When it started, it showed three different series: Into the Labyrinth, The Haunting of Cassie Palmer, and Under the Mountain.
In April 1983, a fourth series called Children of the Stones was added. The last series to be shown as part of The Third Eye was The Witches and the Grinnygog.
Later, Nickelodeon decided to stop showing The Third Eye. This was because the network wanted to focus on making its own new shows. A film expert named Aljean Harmetz said in 1984 that Nickelodeon got these shows very cheaply. This was because other TV networks didn't want them. The shows had lower production quality and the actors had foreign accents, which made them less popular with other channels.
What Shows Were Part of The Third Eye?
The Haunting of Cassie Palmer
In The Haunting of Cassie Palmer, a girl named Cassie Palmer is the main character. Her mom has special psychic powers. Cassie wants to know if she has inherited these powers too. She tries to call a spirit, and things get very unexpected! By the end of the series, her powers are all used up. This show was based on a book by Vivien Alcock.
Under the Mountain
This series is about twins named Rachel and Theo Matheson. They have some telepathic abilities, meaning they can communicate with their minds. They can also use light as a weapon! A mysterious alien named Mr. Jones helps them. They must defeat an evil alien who lives Under the Mountain on Rangitoto Island. Their most important power comes from two special stones from another world. These stones are used as weapons and might even be living things themselves. This story came from a book by Maurice Gee.
Children of the Stones
Adam Brake and his son Matthew move to a small village called Milbury. There, they find that many of the people in the village seem to be in a strange, trance-like state. All the weird things happening are connected to an ancient stone circle that surrounds the village.
Into the Labyrinth
Phil Church and two siblings, Terry and Helen, get special powers from a sorcerer named Rothgo. They are sent Into the Labyrinth. They can talk to Rothgo with their minds, even across different times. Each of them also gets their own unique power. Phil uses Rothgo's powers to challenge a bad ruler named Cynon. Helen can free all prisoners of Masrur. Terry gets control of a genie in the same episode. At the end of the series, Rothgo changes time. This means Terry, Helen, and Phil never go on their journey. But they do get special souvenirs from their adventure. Two more series of "Into the Labyrinth" were shown in the UK, but not on Nickelodeon.
The Witches and the Grinnygog
In The Witches and the Grinnygog, an old English church is moved to a new spot. During the move, a strange stone statue called the Grinnygog goes missing. A woman accidentally finds it and gives it to her dad as a garden decoration, not knowing how important it is. At the same time, three quirky old women arrive in town. They seem to be looking for something lost a long time ago. A nervous, "other-worldly" child also appears. The townspeople start to learn about their town's past. But it's a group of children who figure out the puzzle and fix an old problem. This show was based on a book by Dorothy Edwards.
