Early Life and Music Beginnings
Haviah Mighty was born in Toronto, Canada. She started taking music lessons in Scarborough when she was only four years old. Later, her family moved to Brampton. Her fifth record, Flower City, is named after Brampton's nickname.
Mighty began making her own music when she was fifteen. At seventeen, she released her first mixtape, No Studio, in 2010. After that, she put out three more projects: #EIGHTEEN, Dominant 7eventh, and Bass Loud.
In 2016, she won a national talent show called 'So You Think You Can Rap Canada'. She also got to perform at the CNE's Rising Star Talent event.
Forming The Sorority
In 2017, Haviah Mighty released a cypher (a group rap performance) for International Women's Day. She performed with three other female rappers from the Toronto area. These four artists later decided to form a group together called The Sorority.
Flower City and Early Success
Haviah Mighty released her fifth EP, Flower City, in 2017. This album got a lot of attention and good reviews from music critics. Complex magazine even called it one of their favorite Canadian releases of 2017.
One song from the EP, "Pull Up", was named one of the best Toronto tracks of early 2017 by Now Magazine. On September 7, 2018, her song "Vamonos" was featured on the TV show Insecure on HBO.
In 2018, Mighty was chosen for the Juno Award Masterclass program. Her group, The Sorority, also released their first album, Pledge, in 2018. They toured throughout that year. In 2019, Mighty's song "Champion" with Book was featured in EA's video game NHL 20.
Award-Winning Albums: 13th Floor and Stock Exchange
On March 23, 2019, Haviah Mighty announced her first full studio album, 13th Floor. Both CBC Music and Exclaim! magazine said it was one of the most anticipated Canadian albums of 2019. The first song from the album, "In Women Colour", received great reviews. Complex magazine even called it an anthem.
The album 13th Floor was released on May 10, 2019, and got many positive reviews. In July 2019, 13th Floor was chosen for the 2019 Polaris Music Prize shortlist. Haviah Mighty won this prestigious award on September 16, 2019.
The album's title, 13th Floor, refers to how some buildings skip the 13th floor because the number 13 is seen as unlucky. Mighty explained that she sees it as "something that we remove from our reality because it is something that we don't understand and therefore we dismiss it". She used the album to talk about topics she believes many people choose to ignore.
In 2020, Mighty was featured on Tobi's song "24 (Toronto Remix)". Her song "Thirteen" was also shortlisted for the 2020 SOCAN Songwriting Prize. She released a new song called "Occasion" in December 2020. The music video for her song "Thirteen" won the 2021 Prism Prize.
Mighty performed at the 2021 FreeUp! The Emancipation Day Special. On November 12, 2021, she released her mixtape Stock Exchange.
In 2022, Haviah Mighty toured with the band Arkells. She was the supporting act for their Blink Once tour. In 2023, she joined other artists to record a charity song. It was a version of Serena Ryder's "What I Wouldn't Do". This song helped raise money for Kids Help Phone's Feel Out Loud campaign, which supports youth mental health.
