Hawi (pronounced HAH-wee) is a small community in Hawaiʻi County, Hawaii. It is known as a census-designated place (CDP). This means it's a special area defined by the government for gathering population data. In 2020, about 2,268 people lived there.
Hawi is located on the northern tip of the island of Hawaii. It sits west of another community called Kapaau. These two places together form the most populated part of the North Kohala district.
This area is very important in Hawaiian history. It is the birthplace of Kamehameha I, a famous king who united the Hawaiian Islands. You can also find the Moʻokini heiau here, which is an ancient Hawaiian temple. Long ago, Hawi and Kapaau were busy towns because of the Kohala Sugar plantation.
Today, Hawi is famous as a key spot for the Ironman World Championship Triathlon. It's the northernmost point where athletes turn around during the bicycle part of the race. They then head back to the finish line in Kailua-Kona.
