Hawick Lau Hoi-wai, born on October 13, 1974, is a famous actor and singer from Hong Kong. He became well-known for his roles in TV shows like A Kindred Spirit (1995), Virtues of Harmony (2001), and My Family (2005).
Later, Hawick Lau started acting in mainland China. There, he starred in many popular series. Some of his most famous roles were in Sealed with a Kiss (2011), A Clear Midsummer Night (2013), The Wife's Secret (2014), Lady & Liar (2015), and Chronicle of Life (2016).

Early Life and Education
Hawick Lau grew up in Hong Kong. His father, Lau Dan, is also a well-known Hong Kong actor. His mother's name is Lee Fuk-ying. Hawick studied architecture at Ryerson University in Toronto, Canada.
Becoming a Star: Hawick Lau's Acting Journey
Hawick Lau started his acting career in 1995. His first drama was A Kindred Spirit. In this show, he acted alongside his father, Lau Dan. They even played father and son in the series! In the same year, he also signed a music contract with Sony Music in Hong Kong.
Early Music and TV Success
In 1997, Hawick Lau released his first Chinese music album, called LALA I Love You. The next year, in 1998, he released his first Cantonese album, A Boy's Story.
He continued to act in Hong Kong TV dramas and slowly became more famous. In 2000, he starred in a youth romance drama called Aiming High. He also had a supporting role in the exciting financial show At the Threshold of an Era. From 2001 to 2002, he was in the historical comedy Virtues of Harmony with his father. They also starred in its sequel, Virtues of Harmony II, in 2003. In 2005, he got his first main role in the modern comedy My Family.
The TV station TVB recognized his talent. They named him one of the "5 Fresh Tigers." This was a group of promising young actors that the network wanted to help become big stars.
Moving to Mainland China
After finding success in Hong Kong, Hawick Lau decided to try acting in mainland China, Taiwan, and Singapore in 2005. His first mainland Chinese show was The Hui Merchants of Qing, which aired in 2007. He also acted in a Singaporean show called Destiny and a Taiwanese drama, Letter 1949.
To do well in the Chinese market, Hawick Lau made sure to speak Mandarin Chinese in his public appearances instead of Cantonese. This helped him connect with Chinese audiences. He started gaining more attention after appearing in the 2008 drama Royal Embroidery Workshop. In 2009, he won the Best Actor Award at the Jiangsu TV Drama Awards for his role in Niang Qi.
Rising Popularity and Producing Shows
In 2011, Hawick Lau became very popular after starring in the romantic drama Sealed With a Kiss. His role as Mo Shaoqian was a big hit. He also acted with Wallace Chung in the drama Under The Bodhi Tree.
In 2012, Hawick Lau starred in the romantic comedy movie Holding Love with actress Yang Mi. The movie was released on Chinese Valentine’s Day and was very popular. He worked with Yang Mi again in the drama Ru Yi.
Hawick Lau then started his own production studio. He became a producer for the first time with the romance drama A Clear Midsummer Night. This show aired in 2013 and quickly became a huge success, getting over 100 million views. He also starred in the TV version of the movie Painted Skin: The Resurrection. His acting in this series earned him the Best Actor award at the 13th Huading Awards. He even returned to TVB for a Hong Kong-China show called Master of Destiny, which aired in 2015.
In 2014, he starred with Zhao Liying in the drama The Wife's Secret.
In 2015, Hawick Lau teamed up with Tiffany Tang in the drama Lady & Liar. This show became the most-watched period drama online from that time. His character, Bai Zhengqing, was very popular. He also starred in The Cage of Love and Twice Bloom the Flower that year.
In 2016, Hawick Lau played the Kangxi Emperor in the drama Chronicle of Life. This series was very popular, ranking number one in national ratings. His studio's second show, Road to the North, also premiered that year. He then starred in The Legend of Flying Daggers, based on a famous novel.
In recent years, Hawick Lau has continued to act in various dramas. In 2017, he was in Full Love and Heirs. In 2018, he took the lead role in The Legend of Jade Sword. In 2020, he starred with Chen Duling in The Invisible Life, a modern drama about women in the workplace.
Personal Life
Hawick Lau announced his relationship with Chinese actress Yang Mi on January 8, 2012. They had acted together in several shows, including Ru Yi, Holding Love, and A Clear Midsummer Night.
Hawick Lau and Yang Mi got married in Bali, Indonesia, on January 8, 2014. On June 1, 2014, their daughter was born in Hong Kong. They nicknamed her Little Sticky Rice.
On December 22, 2018, Hawick Lau and Yang Mi announced that they had divorced.
