Zhao Liying (Chinese: 赵丽颖, born October 16, 1987), also known as Zanilia Zhao, is a famous Chinese actress. She is well-known for her roles in many popular TV shows. Some of her most famous series include Legend of Lu Zhen (2013), Boss & Me (2014), The Journey of Flower (2015), and Princess Agents (2017). She has won several important awards for her acting, like the Best Actress award at the Flying Apsaras Awards and the Golden Eagle Awards. Zhao Liying has also starred in movies such as The Monkey King 3 (2018) and Article 20 (2024).

Early Life and Beginnings
Zhao Liying was born on October 16, 1987, in Langfang, a city in Hebei province, China. She went to the Langfang School of Electronic Information Engineering. Zhao has shared that her early life in a village helped her become strong and determined. She believes these experiences made her the person she is today. She said that a strong heart and chasing dreams with perseverance are what make a hero.
Her Acting Journey
Starting Out: 2006–2012
Zhao Liying began her journey in acting in 2006. She won a competition called the Yahoo Search Star Game. After winning, she signed with a company called Huayi Brothers. In 2007, she made her first appearance in a TV drama called Golden Marriage.
In 2009, Zhao acted in her first historical drama, The Firmament of The Pleiades. This show was even shown in Japan and was highly praised. Zhao won an award for Most Popular Actress for her work. She started to become more recognized in China after appearing in The Dream of Red Mansions in 2010. Her popularity grew even more in 2011 when she played Princess Qing'er in New My Fair Princess.
Becoming a Star: 2013–2015
In 2013, Zhao Liying starred in the historical drama Legend of Lu Zhen. She played a girl who worked hard to become the first female prime minister. This drama was a big hit in China and also in South Korea and Japan. It made Zhao very well-known. She also acted in a film called Palace: Lock Sinensis, where she played a tricky princess, which was different from her usual sweet roles.
In 2014, Zhao starred in the romantic comedy Boss & Me. This show was very popular in China and other countries. Her success in various dramas led her to be named the "Golden Eagle Goddess" at the 10th China Golden Eagle TV Art Festival. She even performed at the opening of the ceremony!
In 2015, Zhao starred in the fantasy romance drama The Journey of Flower. This show was a huge success, becoming the first Chinese drama to get over 20 billion views online. This drama made Zhao even more famous. She won many awards for her role, including Best Actress at the 28th China TV Golden Eagle Award.
Reaching New Heights: 2016–Present
In 2016, Zhao Liying appeared in the action-adventure drama The Mystic Nine. This series was also very successful, with over 10 billion views. She won Best Actress at the 3rd Hengdian Film and TV Festival for this role. She then played the main female character, Bi Yao, in Noble Aspirations. This drama had over 23 billion views online, setting a new record at the time. Zhao also starred in her first war drama, Rookie Agent Rouge. By the end of 2016, all of Zhao's dramas combined had over 110 billion views, which was the highest for any Chinese actor.
In 2017, Zhao starred in the movie Duckweed. This film was a big hit and earned her the Favorite Actress award at the Beijing College Student Film Festival. She also starred in the film Eternal Wave, a spy movie set in the 1930s. Zhao returned to TV with the historical action drama Princess Agents. She played a slave girl who becomes a powerful general. Princess Agents was a huge success both in China and around the world, becoming the most-watched Chinese TV series at that time. That same year, Forbes China included Zhao in their "30 Under 30 Asia" list, recognizing her as an influential person under 30.
In 2018, Zhao starred in the fantasy film The Monkey King 3, playing the Ruler of Women's Country. She then starred in the historical drama The Story of Minglan. This drama was highly praised and had very high TV ratings. Zhao was nominated for Best Actress for her role.
In 2019, it was announced that Zhao would star in the drama Legend of Fei. In 2024, she appeared in the comedy-drama film Article 20. She also won the AFA New Generation Award at the 17th Asian Film Awards.
Other Activities and Roles
Besides acting, Zhao Liying has taken on other important roles. In 2016, she became the tourism ambassador for her home province, Hebei. She also became the Vice President of a technology company called Yi Xia Technology.
In May 2017, Zhao unveiled her own wax figure at Madame Tussauds Beijing. The same year, she became a brand ambassador for the famous fashion brand Dior in China. In March 2019, Zhao announced that she would be working with Hesong Media.
Personal Life
On October 16, 2018, Zhao Liying announced her marriage to actor Feng Shaofeng on social media. They welcomed a baby boy on March 8, 2019. However, on April 23, 2021, Feng and Zhao announced their divorce. They share custody of their son.
