Exo (Hangul: 엑소; RR: Ekso) is a popular South Korean boy band. They are based in Seoul and were formed by SM Entertainment in 2011. The group officially started performing in 2012.
Exo has nine members: Xiumin, Suho, Lay, Baekhyun, Chen, Chanyeol, D.O., Kai, and Sehun. They are known for singing and performing in Korean, Mandarin, and Japanese.
When Exo first started, they had twelve members. They were split into two groups: Exo-K and Exo-M. Exo-K sang in Korean, and Exo-M sang in Mandarin. In 2014 and 2015, three members (Kris, Luhan, and Tao) left the group. Since 2014, Exo has performed as one big group. They still sing in different languages.
Some members have also formed smaller groups, called sub-units. Exo-CBX debuted in 2016 with Chen, Baekhyun, and Xiumin. Sehun and Chanyeol started promoting as Exo-SC in 2019. Each member also works on their own music, movies, or TV shows.
Exo's Music Success
Exo's first studio album, XOXO, came out in 2013. It included the hit song "Growl". This album was very popular. It sold over one million copies, including its special repackage version. This made Exo the first Korean group in twelve years to sell so many albums.
Their later albums also did very well. Each of their next Korean studio albums, along with their repackages, sold over one million copies. Exo's sixth studio album, Don't Mess Up My Tempo (2018), reached number 23 on the US Billboard 200 chart. This was their highest spot on that chart. Their eighth studio album, Exist (2023), is their best-selling album in South Korea. It sold over 2 million copies.
Awards and Achievements
Exo has won many awards in South Korea and around the world. They won their first music show award in June 2013 for their song "Wolf" on Music Bank. For four years, Exo held the record for the most music show wins for a single song. Their song "Call Me Baby" (2015) won 18 times.
The band has won over 100 music program awards in total. They are the second group to do this, after Girls' Generation. Exo has also received 23 Daesang awards. A Daesang (Hangul: 대상) is like a "grand prize." It is the highest award given at South Korean music shows. Six of these Daesangs came from the Mnet Asian Music Awards. This amazing achievement was even written in the 2018 Guinness World Records book.
In November 2017, Exo received a special award from the Prime Minister of South Korea. This award is given to people who do great public service or are excellent in their field. When they received it, Suho said they would work to promote K-pop and Korea to the world.
Exo's Charity Work
Exo members are also involved in helping others. In December 2012, the members of Exo-K became goodwill ambassadors for South Korea's Red Cross Youth. In July 2014, Exo was chosen as official ambassadors for Fashion-KODE 2014. This event was hosted by South Korea's Ministry of Culture, Sports and Tourism. That same month, Samsung announced Exo as their brand ambassadors for the 2014 Summer Youth Olympics.
Since they started, Exo members have volunteered and given money to many charities. These include childcare centers, the Korea Childhood Leukemia Foundation, and medical services in China.
In 2015, Exo began working with Smile For U. This is a project by SM Entertainment and UNICEF. It helps support music education for children in Asia. Part of the money from Exo's second special winter album, Sing for You, and other albums, was given to this project.
