Byun Baek-hyun (Hangul: 변백현; born May 6, 1992), known as Baekhyun, is a famous South Korean singer and actor. He is a member of the popular K-pop boy band Exo, and also part of its smaller groups Exo-K and Exo-CBX. In 2019, Baekhyun became the leader of the supergroup SuperM.
Baekhyun started his solo music career in 2019. His first album, City Lights, sold over half a million copies. It became the best-selling album by a solo artist in South Korea during the 2010s. He then released two more successful albums, Delight (2020) and Bambi (2021), both selling over a million copies. He is sometimes called the "Genius Idol" and has won the Mnet Asian Music Award for Best Male Artist three times in a row from 2019 to 2021.

Early Life and Training
Baekhyun was born on May 6, 1992, in Bucheon, Gyeonggi Province, South Korea. He has an older brother. Baekhyun started training to be a singer when he was 11 years old. He was inspired by the South Korean singer Rain.
He went to Jungwon High School in Bucheon. There, he was the main singer in a band called Honsusangtae. His band even won a local music festival! Baekhyun also took piano lessons. Besides music, he trained in martial arts when he was young. He holds a black belt in Hapkido.
Baekhyun was discovered by an agent from SM Entertainment while he was preparing for college entrance exams. He joined SM Entertainment in 2011.
Music Career
Becoming a K-pop Star (2012–2015)
Baekhyun was officially introduced as the ninth member of Exo on January 30, 2012. He is one of the main singers in the group. Exo officially debuted in April 2012 and quickly became very popular.
In 2014, Baekhyun and fellow Exo member Suho became hosts for the music TV show Inkigayo. They left the show later that year to focus on Exo's music. In July 2014, Baekhyun tried acting in a musical. He played the main role of Don Lockwood in Singin' in the Rain.
In April 2015, Baekhyun released his first solo song, "Beautiful." It was for Exo's web-drama Exo Next Door. This song was the first from a web drama to reach the top of digital music charts.
New Roles and Exo-CBX (2016–2018)
In January 2016, Baekhyun released a duet song called "Dream" with Miss A member Suzy. The song quickly became number one on music charts. It also won first place five times on TV music shows. In April 2016, Baekhyun won an award for Most Popular Singer in South Korea. In May 2016, he released another duet, "The Day", with singer K.Will.
In August 2016, Baekhyun started acting in TV dramas. He appeared in the historical drama Moon Lovers: Scarlet Heart Ryeo. He even won a New Star Award for his acting! He also sang a song for the drama's soundtrack with other Exo members, Chen and Xiumin. In October 2016, Baekhyun, Chen, and Xiumin formed Exo's first official smaller group, Exo-CBX. They released their first album, Hey Mama!, on October 31.
In February 2017, Baekhyun released another popular duet, "Rain", with Sistar member Soyou. This song also reached number one on all South Korean music charts. In April 2017, Baekhyun released a solo song called "Take You Home".
On February 5, 2018, Baekhyun sang the South Korean national anthem at a big event for the 2018 Winter Olympics. In August 2018, Baekhyun and rapper Loco released a song together called "Young."
Solo Success and SuperM (2019–2022)
In July 2019, Baekhyun officially started his solo career with his album City Lights. This album sold over 550,000 copies in 2019, setting a new record for solo artists in South Korea. It became the best-selling solo album of the 2010s. In August, Baekhyun joined SuperM, a special K-pop supergroup formed by SM Entertainment and Capitol Records. SuperM debuted in October. In December, Baekhyun won the Mnet Asian Music Award for Best Male Artist for his successful solo debut.
In early 2020, Baekhyun released two songs for TV shows, "My Love" and "On the Road." In May, he released his second solo album, Delight, with the main song "Candy". This album received over 732,000 pre-orders, which was a record for a solo artist in South Korea. By July, Delight had sold over 1,000,000 copies. This made it the first album by a solo artist in South Korea to do so in 19 years! Later in 2020, he released more songs for TV shows and a digital single called "Amusement Park". He won Best Male Artist at the Mnet Asian Music Awards for the second year in a row.
On January 3, 2021, Baekhyun held his first solo online concert, "Baekhyun: Light." Over 110,000 fans from 120 countries watched it. A day later, he released "Get You Alone," a song from his first Japanese album. On March 30, Baekhyun released his third Korean album, Bambi. This was his last release before he began his mandatory military service in South Korea. Bambi also sold over one million copies, making it his second album in a row to achieve this. In December, he won his third consecutive Mnet Asian Music Award for Best Male Artist.
New Beginnings (2023–Present)
In June 2023, Baekhyun, Chen, and Xiumin announced they would start their own company, INB100, for their solo activities. However, they would continue to work with SM Entertainment for Exo group activities. On October 23, 2023, Baekhyun performed as Ezreal in a virtual boyband called "Heartsteel" for the game League of Legends.
On January 8, 2024, Baekhyun officially started his solo work under his own label, INB100. In January 2024, INB100 announced that Baekhyun would go on a concert tour called Lonsdaleite across Asia, starting in Seoul. On July 28, 2024, Baekhyun shared that he would release new music in September 2024.
Baekhyun's Voice
Baekhyun's voice is often described as "soaring" and "standout." It is a tenor voice, which means it is a high male singing voice. His strong vocals are a key part of his music.

Fashion and Brands
Baekhyun has worked with several brands. In May 2017, he teamed up with Montblanc for their digital watch. In May 2018, he launched his own fashion brand called "Privé by BBH." It is a unisex streetwear brand, meaning it's for everyone. Baekhyun is the co-creative director of the brand. He said he wants his clothes to make people feel brave.
In September 2020, Baekhyun became a brand ambassador for Burberry, a famous fashion company. He was also featured on the cover of Harper's Bazaar Korea magazine. He has also been a brand ambassador for beauty and health food brands.
Helping Others
In September 2024, it was announced that Baekhyun donated 50 million South Korean won (about $36,000 USD) in January 2024. This money went to the Friends of the National Museum of Korea. It will help bring back Korean historical items that are currently in other countries.
Personal Life
Baekhyun, along with fellow Exo members Chanyeol and Suho, took online classes at Kyung Hee Cyber University.
On May 6, 2021, Baekhyun began his mandatory military service in South Korea. He served as a public service worker and was discharged on February 5, 2023. The next day, he greeted his fans in a live broadcast online.
