Exo is a popular South Korean–Chinese boy band. They formed in 2011 in Seoul, South Korea. The band has nine members: Xiumin, Suho, Lay Zhang, Baekhyun, Chen, Chanyeol, D.O., Kai, and Sehun. By July 2023, they had released many albums and EPs (Extended Plays) in Korean, Mandarin, and Japanese.
Exo became very successful after their first EP, Mama, came out in 2012. This EP helped them win many awards. They won "Best New Asian Artist" at the 2012 Mnet Asian Music Awards. They were also nominated for "Artist of the Year" at the same event. In 2013, they won the "New Artist Award" at the Seoul Music Awards.
Their first full album, XOXO, was released in June 2013. This album brought them their first Daesang award. In South Korea's music world, a Daesang is like the "grand prize" at an awards show. XOXO won "Album of the Year" at the 2013 Mnet Asian Music Awards. It also won the "Disc Daesang" at the 2014 Golden Disc Awards. The song "Growl" from the album was named "Song of the Year" at the 2013 Melon Music Awards.
Exo has continued to win awards over the years. By January 2019, they had won 23 Daesang awards from different shows. They even won some awards multiple times in a row! This includes five "Album of the Year" wins at the Mnet Asian Music Awards. They also won four "Disc Daesang" awards at the Golden Disc Awards. Plus, they got four "Daesang" wins at the Seoul Music Awards. They also won "Artist of the Year" twice in a row at the Melon Music Awards.
Exo has also won over 100 "music program" awards. These are given out weekly on TV shows in South Korea and China. They go to the artist with the most popular song that week. In 2017, Exo received a special "Prime Minister's Commendation" award. This award recognizes people who have done great public service or are excellent in their field. Exo even made it into the 2018 Guinness World Records book! They hold the record for "Most Daesang ('Grand Prize') awards won at the Mnet Asian Music Awards" with five wins at the time. Forbes magazine also named Exo as one of the most powerful celebrities in South Korea. They were ranked first in 2015 and 2016. They were also in the top five in 2014, 2017, and 2018. In total, Exo has won 179 awards from 324 nominations.
