Kim Min-seok (Hangul: 김민석), known by his stage name Xiumin (Hangul: 시우민), is a famous South Korean singer and actor. He was born on March 26, 1990. Xiumin is a member of the popular K-pop boy band Exo. He is also part of Exo's sub-group, Exo-M. Plus, he is the leader of another sub-unit called Exo-CBX. Xiumin started his solo music career on September 26, 2022. His first solo music was an extended play (EP) titled Brand New.

Understanding Xiumin's Name

Xiumin's stage name is special. It combines two Chinese characters. The first part, "Xiù" (秀), means "great" or "show." The second part, "Mín" (珉), comes from his birth name, Min-seok. So, his stage name can mean something like "great show" or "show of greatness."

Xiumin's Life and Career Journey

Early Life and Starting His Career (1990–2013)

Xiumin was born in Seoul, South Korea. He grew up in Guri, Gyeonggi Province. He studied at Catholic Kwandong University. Xiumin is very good at martial arts. He has black belts in Kendo and Taekwondo. He also trained in Wushu and Fencing. Xiumin loves football a lot. He is even an honorary ambassador for the Korea Football Association.

Before joining SM Entertainment, Xiumin tried out for JYP Entertainment in 2008. He was not accepted there. But in 2008, he won second place in the SM Everysing Contest. This led him to become a trainee with SM Entertainment that same year.

Xiumin was introduced as the seventh member of the K-pop group Exo in January 2012. Exo officially started their music career on April 8, 2012. In 2013, Xiumin appeared in a music video. He was in the song "Gone" by singer Jin, who is now part of Lovelyz. Actress Kim Yoo-jung was also in the video.

Acting Roles and Exo-CBX (2015–2020)

In January 2015, Xiumin started acting in musicals. He played the character Aquila in School OZ. This musical was produced by SM Entertainment. Other famous artists like Changmin and Key were also in it. In October 2015, Xiumin got a main role in a web drama. He starred with actress Kim So-eun in Falling for Challenge. He also released his first solo song for this drama. The song was called "You Are the One." Falling for Challenge became very popular. It was the most-watched web drama in South Korea in 2015. It got 20 million views in just 17 days.

In February 2016, Xiumin was featured in a song. He sang with Jimin from the group AOA on her solo song "Call You Bae." He also appeared in its music video. In July 2016, Xiumin made his first movie appearance. He was in the South Korean film Seondal: The Man Who Sells the River with actor Yoo Seung-ho. In August 2016, he worked with other Exo members, Chen and Baekhyun. They released a song called "For You." This song was for the TV series Moon Lovers: Scarlet Heart Ryeo. In October 2016, Xiumin, Chen, and Baekhyun formed Exo's first official sub-unit, Exo-CBX. They debuted with their EP Hey Mama! on October 31.

In July 2017, Xiumin worked with Mark from the group NCT. They released a song called "Young & Free." This was part of S.M. Entertainment's digital music project, Station. In August, Xiumin joined a reality TV show. He became a regular cast member on MBC's It's Dangerous Beyond The Blankets.

Xiumin started his mandatory military service on May 7, 2019. He served as an active duty soldier. Before joining the army, he held his last concerts. These included Exo-CBX's Magical Circus concert in Japan. He also had his solo fan meeting, Xiuweet Time, in Seoul. After he enlisted, his debut solo single "You" was released on May 9. In August 2019, Xiumin starred in an army musical. It was called "Return: The Promise of That Day." He performed with Onew from Shinee. Xiumin finished his military service on December 6, 2020. He did not return to the army due to COVID-19 policies.

Solo Debut and New Beginnings (2022–Present)

SM Entertainment announced that Xiumin would star in a new drama. The drama, CEO-dol Mart, was released in 2023.

On September 26, 2022, Xiumin released his first solo EP, Brand New. The main song was also called "Brand New." This EP has a retro K-pop sound. It brings back "nostalgic '90s sonic euphoria," according to The Korea Herald.

On April 5, 2023, it was confirmed that Xiumin would have a collaboration song with Eunha. The song, "Who?", was released on April 9, 2023.

On June 1, 2023, there was news that Xiumin, Chen, and Baekhyun ended their contracts with SM Entertainment. They mentioned issues with payment and unfair deals. However, on June 19, SM and the three members announced they had solved their problems. The members decided to stay with the agency.

On September 20, 2023, it was announced that Xiumin sang a song for the CEO-dol Mart soundtrack. The song is titled "Daisy."

On January 8, 2024, Xiumin joined Baekhyun's new company, INB100. This company will manage his solo activities. Exo's group activities will still be managed by SM Entertainment.
