The Castle's Story
The Ross family built Hawkhead Castle. They are believed to have owned the land from the mid-1400s. Some records suggest they might have owned it even earlier, from the late 1300s. They might have even gotten it from the king in 1367.
The castle was made bigger in 1634. Later, in 1782, it was changed again. The Ross family stopped owning the property in the 1800s. Today, Hawkhead Hospital stands where the castle once was.
What the Castle Looked Like
Hawkhead Castle had a main keep. A keep is like a strong tower, often the safest part of a castle. In 1634, more buildings were added. These new parts formed a quadrangle. A quadrangle is a courtyard surrounded by buildings on all four sides.
After its changes in 1782, the castle was surrounded by beautiful parks and gardens. Imagine a grand house with lots of green space around it!
