Hay Lakes is a small village located in central Alberta, Canada. It sits along Highway 21, which is a main road. The village is about 32 kilometers (20 miles) north of Camrose and 50 kilometers (31 miles) southeast of Edmonton. Many of the first people to settle here came from countries like Sweden and Norway.

A Look Back at Hay Lakes
Early Days and Settlers
Hay Lakes was first settled by pioneers, especially people who moved from Sweden and Norway. A very important person in the early history was James McKernan. He set up a telegraph station in the area way back in 1876. This helped people communicate across long distances.
The Railway Arrives
In 1911, something big happened: the Canadian National Railway started building a train line. This line connected Edmonton to Calgary and passed right through Hay Lakes. The railway helped the village grow by making it easier to transport goods and people.
Becoming a Village
Hay Lakes officially became a village on April 17, 1928. For a short time, between 1928 and 1932, it was known as the Village of Hay Lake. After that, its name was changed to Hay Lakes, which it still is today.
