Haydar Baş (born January 28, 1947 – died April 14, 2020) was a Turkish politician and businessman. He helped start the Independent Turkey Party and led it until he passed away.
He also owned several media companies. These included Meltem TV and Mesaj TV, along with Öğüt, Mesaj, and İcmal magazines. He also owned the Yeni Mesaj newspaper. Haydar Baş died in a hospital in Trabzon on April 14, 2020. His death was due to problems from COVID-19.
Haydar Baş's Education
Haydar Baş finished his primary, secondary, and high school in Trabzon. He then graduated from Kayseri Supreme Islamic Institute in 1970.
Later, he earned his postgraduate degree and became a professor. He received these from Baku State University. He also taught at the Faculty of Eastern Languages and Literature Research there.
Political Career
Haydar Baş started his political journey in 1970. He joined the National Salvation Party for a short time. He left because his ideas were different from the party leader, Necmettin Erbakan.
Even after leaving, he stayed interested in politics. He supported the True Path Party in the 1994 elections.
Founding the Independent Turkey Party
On September 25, 2001, Haydar Baş created the Independent Turkey Party. He led this party until he died.
He became well-known in politics during the 2007 elections. This was thanks to his party's special slogan. At a meeting in Ankara, a farmer's sign said, "We want jobs, we want food, we want Haydar Baş in Ankara in this election."
This inspired the party's slogan: "Work, food, this time Haydar Baş." This slogan helped many people learn about the party. In the 2011 elections, he ran for a seat in parliament with the Democratic Party.
In the 2015 elections, he made a big promise. He said he would bring in a lot of money with his "national economy model." He also promised to give everyone a monthly salary of 500 Turkish Lira.
In the 2017 Turkish constitutional referendum, his party voted "no." They did not take part in the June 2018 election.
Passing Away
In his hometown of Trabzon, eight of his family members got COVID-19. This happened during the coronavirus pandemic. On April 9, he began treatment at a private hospital.
After four days, he moved to the intensive care unit. He needed help breathing. On April 13, he was moved to Kanuni Education and Research Hospital. Haydar Baş passed away on April 14, 2020, from COVID-19 problems. He was 73 years old.
His funeral prayer was held on April 15. It took place in Yenimahalle, Trabzon. His son, Osman Baş, led the prayer. Haydar Baş was buried in Martyrdom Hill. Many local officials attended the funeral. After his death, his son Hüseyin Baş became the new leader of the party.
