Baku State University (BSU), also known as BDU, is a big public university in Baku, Azerbaijan. It was started on September 1, 1919, by the Parliament of the Azerbaijan Democratic Republic.
When it first opened, the university had four main study areas. These were history and languages, physics and math, law, and medicine. About 1094 students joined in the beginning. The first leader of BSU was V.I. Razumovsky, who was a surgery professor.
In 1930, the university was temporarily closed down. It was replaced by a teaching institute. But in 1934, BSU opened its doors again. It kept going strong even during the tough years of World War II, when there weren't many teachers.
By 1959, BSU had grown to 13 different study areas. Some parts of BSU later became their own universities. These include the Azerbaijan Medical University and the Azerbaijan State Economic University.
Many important people have studied at BSU. Two former presidents of Azerbaijan, Abulfaz Elchibey and Heydar Aliyev, went to BSU. The famous physicist Lev Landau, who won a Nobel Prize, also studied there from 1922 to 1924.
BSU is the only university from Azerbaijan that is ranked by international groups. It is known as one of the top universities in the country.

History of Baku State University
Baku State University was created on September 1, 1919. This happened because the Parliament of the Azerbaijan Democratic Republic decided to establish it. The university began with four main departments: history and languages, physics and math, law, and medicine.
The first leader of the university was a well-known surgeon named V. I. Razumovsky. In the early years, from 1920 to 1940, many important professors taught there. These included the Azerbaijani writer Abdurrahim bey Hagverdiyev and other scholars. The university also invited famous teachers from other countries to come to Baku.
In 1930, the university was closed for a short time. This was part of a plan to change how higher education worked. A new teaching institute was created instead. However, BSU started up again in 1934. It quickly became a main center for science and education in Azerbaijan.
Even though many teachers went to serve in World War II, the university stayed strong. In 1945, BSU teachers helped create the Azerbaijan Academy of Science. Many of Azerbaijan's top universities today started out as parts of Baku State University. These include the Azerbaijan Medical University and the Azerbaijan University of Economy.
After 1969, BSU grew even more. New study areas, departments, and about 30 science research labs were added. The university continued to develop under the leadership of Heydar Aliyev. It has always been a very important place for science and learning in Azerbaijan. Many famous scientists, thinkers, and politicians have graduated from BSU.
As of May 2021, Baku State University offers 16 main fields of study. It has 55 bachelor's degree programs and 153 master's degree programs.
In 2019, BSU celebrated its 100th birthday. Celebrations took place in Azerbaijan, Vienna, Austria, and at the UNESCO office in Paris. A special medal was made to honor the 100th anniversary. Over 100 people received this medal.
International Connections
BSU is part of many international groups and organizations. It is a member of the Association of Universities of Eurasia. This group connects many universities from countries that were once part of the USSR.
From 2002 to 2004, BSU was in charge of the Association of Universities of Black Sea States. The university also has agreements with many other top universities around the world. These include Moscow State University, Middle East Technical University, and Vienna University.
These agreements help students and teachers exchange places. They also lead to joint science conferences, workshops, and new textbooks.
