In 1930, the university was temporarily closed by the government. It was replaced by a teaching institute. But in 1934, BSU opened again. It kept working even during the difficult years of World War II, when there weren't enough teachers.

By 1959, BSU had grown to 13 departments. Some parts of BSU later became separate universities, like the Azerbaijan Medical University and Azerbaijan State Economic University.

Many important people have studied at BSU. This includes two former presidents of Azerbaijan, Abulfaz Elchibey and Heydar Aliyev. Also, Nobel Prize-winning physicist Lev Landau studied there from 1922 to 1924.

BSU is the only university from Azerbaijan that is ranked by international groups. It is known for its academic performance.

Baku State University was created on September 1, 1919. This happened because the Parliament of Azerbaijan Democratic Republic made a special decision. The university began with four main departments: history and language, physics and math, law, and medicine. The first head of the university was a well-known surgeon named V. I. Razumovsky.

In the early years, from 1920 to 1940, many important professors taught at BSU. These included the Azerbaijani writer Abdurrahim bek Haqverdiyev and other scholars. The university also invited famous teachers from other countries to come to Baku.

In 1930, the university was closed for a short time. This was part of a government plan to change higher education. A new teaching institute was set up instead. However, BSU started up again in 1934. It quickly became a leading place for science and education in Azerbaijan. Even during World War II, when many teachers were away fighting, the university stayed strong. In 1945, BSU teachers helped create the Azerbaijan Academy of Science. Many of Azerbaijan's top universities today, like the Medical University and the University of Economy, actually started from parts of Baku State University.

After 1969, BSU grew even more. New departments and about 30 science research labs were opened. The university kept getting bigger and better, especially when Heydar Aliyev was president. Because of its long history, Baku State University has always been a very important place for learning and science in Azerbaijan. Many famous scientists, thinkers, and politicians, including Heydar Aliyev, studied here. As of 2021, BSU offers 16 main study areas with many different bachelor's and master's degrees.

In 2019, Baku State University celebrated its 100th birthday! Celebrations happened in Azerbaijan, Vienna, Austria, and at the UNESCO office in Paris. A special medal was even made to honor the 100th anniversary of BSU. More than 100 people received this medal.

Working with Other Countries

BSU works with many universities and groups around the world. It is part of the Association of Universities of Eurasia, which connects many universities from countries that used to be part of the USSR. From 2002 to 2004, BSU was even in charge of the Association of Universities of Black Sea States.

The university has also made agreements with other top universities. These include Moscow State University, Middle East Technical University, Indiana University, and Vienna University. These agreements help students and teachers visit other countries. They also lead to joint science meetings, workshops, and new textbooks.
