Hayford Peirce (born January 7, 1942 – died November 19, 2020) was an American writer. He was known for his exciting stories. He wrote science fiction, mysteries, and even a spy thriller. His works appeared in popular magazines like Analog and Galaxy. He also wrote for mystery magazines such as Alfred Hitchcock's Mystery Magazine.
The Encyclopedia of Science Fiction said he was good at creating "lightly written tales" with "unusually well conceived" backgrounds. This means his stories were fun to read and had very detailed worlds.
About Hayford Peirce
Hayford Peirce was born in 1942 in Bangor, Maine. His father was also named Hayford. His dad was an expert on Byzantine art. He wrote several books about it in French.
Peirce started his writing career in 1974. His first story was "Unlimited Warfare." This science fiction short story was sold to Analog magazine.
In 2017, a financial article shared an interesting fact about Peirce. It explained how he became a "dividend millionaire." He did this by investing in stocks that paid high dividends. He built his wealth over 22 years.
His Writing Career
Peirce wrote many science fiction and mystery novels. Some of his books were published by Tor Books. Others were published by Wildside Press. His stories have been translated into different languages. Two examples are Napoleon Disentimed and Blood on the Hibiscus.
He wrote one spy thriller called The Bel Air Blitz. He wrote this book in London in 1968. This was when spy stories were very popular.
Popular Story Series
Many of his short stories featured characters who appeared again and again. These main characters are called protagonists.
In science fiction, he had several popular series:
- His "Chap Foey Rider" stories were about a "Capitalist to the Stars."
- His "Jonathan White" stories followed a "Stockbroker in Orbit."
- His "Sam Fearon" stories featured a "Time Scanner."
In the mystery field, he wrote two collections set in Tahiti:
- One series was about "Commissaire Tama," a chief of police.
- Another series followed "Joe Caneili," a private detective.
Peirce also worked with another writer, David M. Alexander. They wrote stories together that appeared in Analog magazine.
His Later Years
Hayford Peirce passed away on November 19, 2020. He was hospitalized before his death. His wife used to own a Chinese restaurant. It was called Wanda Z's Chinese. The restaurant was in Oro Valley and closed in 2015.
