Hayley Arceneaux was born on December 4, 1991. She is an American physician assistant and a commercial astronaut. She joined billionaire Jared Isaacman on the first private spaceflight by SpaceX, called Inspiration4. This mission launched on September 16, 2021. It landed safely in the ocean on September 18, 2021.
Hayley Arceneaux became the first person in space with a prosthetic leg bone. She had survived bone cancer when she was a child. At 29 years old, Arceneaux was the youngest American to travel to space. A few months later, 23-year-old Cameron Bess flew on Blue Origin NS-19. However, Bess's flight was suborbital, meaning it did not orbit Earth. So, Arceneaux is still the youngest American to have orbited our planet.

Early Life and Education
Hayley Arceneaux grew up in St. Francisville, Louisiana. Her father, Howard Stanford Arceneaux, passed away in 2018. Her brother and sister-in-law are both aerospace engineers. This means they design and build spacecraft and aircraft.
Facing Cancer as a Child
When Hayley was 10 years old, her left knee started to hurt. Doctors first thought it was just a sprain. But a few months later, tests showed she had osteosarcoma. This is a type of bone cancer. Her family went to St. Jude Children's Research Hospital for her treatment.
Her treatment included many rounds of chemotherapy. This is medicine used to fight cancer. She also had surgery to save her leg. This surgery involved replacing her knee and putting a titanium rod in her left thigh bone. After surgery, she had physical therapy to help her recover.
Becoming a Physician Assistant
Her experience at St. Jude inspired her. She wanted to help other cancer patients. Today, she works as a physician assistant at St. Jude. She helps patients who have leukemia and lymphoma, which are types of blood cancer.
Hayley Arceneaux graduated from St. Joseph's Academy in Baton Rouge, Louisiana. She earned a degree in Spanish in 2014. In 2016, she earned her Physician Assistant (PA) degree. She got this degree from LSU Health in Shreveport, Louisiana.
Journey to Space
The Inspiration4 Mission
Hayley Arceneaux was the chief medical officer on the Inspiration4 mission. This was a private spaceflight paid for by billionaire Jared Isaacman. She has mentioned that she believes she is the first Cajun person to go to space. She is also the first person to launch into space with a prosthesis.
As part of her training for the mission, she climbed Mount Rainier in Washington. She did this with the rest of the Inspiration4 crew. During their training, Hayley Arceneaux was given the call sign "Nova."
Recognition and Achievements
Hayley Arceneaux was featured on the cover of a Time magazine issue in August 2021. She was on the cover with the other members of the Inspiration4 crew. She is also a member of the Association of Space Explorers. This is a group for people who have traveled to space.
