Haymarket, Newcastle facts for kids
Haymarket is a lively area in the northern part of central Newcastle upon Tyne. It's a really important place for travel, as it has several transport hubs. These include Eldon Square bus station, Haymarket bus station, and Haymarket Metro station. Haymarket is also home to impressive buildings like parts of Newcastle Civic Centre, Newcastle University, and Northumbria University. You'll also find the well-known Church of St Thomas the Martyr here.
This area also features several war memorials. One famous one is "The Response, 1914" by Goscombe John. A former director of the Imperial War Museum called it "one of the finest sculptural ensembles on any British monument." The main shopping street, Northumberland Street, starts at the northern end of Haymarket.
Modernizing Haymarket
The Haymarket Metro station got a big makeover. It cost £20 million to rebuild! The Princess Royal officially reopened it in 2010. This new station, called the Haymarket Hub, also included shops and other businesses.
In 1999, a unique art project was put in place around the Metro station. It was called "Shoulder to Shoulder" and cost £270,000. This art piece had 52 figures standing close together. It acted like a fence, keeping heavy traffic away from people walking. The sculpture also had a water feature, but it was turned off later to save money. In 2008, the figures were taken down and stored. Some of them were even sold by the City Council on eBay in 2011.
Besides the Haymarket Hub, Newcastle University has also built new facilities facing Haymarket. These include the INTO Newcastle buildings and the Student and Administrative Services Building. Both of these important university buildings opened in 2010.
