The Princess Royal is a special title given by the British King or Queen to their oldest daughter. It's like a unique gift from the monarch. This is different from the Prince of Wales title, which is always given to the oldest son.
Only one person can hold the title of Princess Royal at any time. For example, Elizabeth II never became Princess Royal because her aunt, Princess Mary, already held the title.

Princess Louisa Maria (1692–1712) was the last daughter of King James II. She was born after her father lost his throne. She was called Princess Royal by people who supported her father (known as Jacobites), even though she wasn't officially given the title by a reigning monarch.
