Exploring Northumberland Street
Northumberland Street stretches about 400 meters long. It is a great place to visit for shopping and fun.
Where is Northumberland Street?
The street starts in the north near the Haymarket Metro station. It is also close to The Newcastle Civic Centre. In the south, it reaches Pilgrim Street and the Monument Metro station.
You can find entrances to two big shopping centers here. These are the Eldon Square Shopping Centre and the Monument Mall Shopping Centre.
A Street for Walking
Northumberland Street is now mostly for people walking. This means cars are not usually allowed. This change happened over time to make it safer and more pleasant for shoppers.
For many years, until 1967, Northumberland Street was part of the A1. This was a major road connecting London and Edinburgh. After the Tyne Tunnel opened, the A1 route changed.
The northern part of the street used to have car and bus traffic. This made those shops less popular. But since 1999, this section has also become pedestrianised. This means it is now also just for people walking.
Only delivery vehicles can drive on the street in the early morning. After that, no cars, bikes, or skateboards are allowed. This helps keep the street safe for everyone.
