Eldon Square is a large shopping centre in Newcastle upon Tyne, England. It first opened its doors in 1976. The centre was built where a famous old part of Newcastle, called Old Eldon Square, used to be. This older area was designed by John Dobson around 1824.

When it first opened, Eldon Square was the biggest shopping centre in a city in the UK. For a few years, starting in 2013, it was known as Intu Eldon Square. But in 2020, it went back to its original name, Eldon Square.

Where is Eldon Square?

The shopping centre is built near where the old town wall of Newcastle used to be. This wall followed the path of what is now Blackett Street. So, the modern shopping centre actually stands on both sides of where this ancient wall once ran.

Long ago, around 1770, maps show that a bowling green was located where parts of the shopping centre are today. This includes the areas now occupied by Marks & Spencer and John Lewis. The area where the Northumberland Street entrance and Fenwick store are now was once used for market gardens.

In 1824, John Dobson designed Old Eldon Square. This design featured beautiful buildings with stone fronts, facing a central town square.

Stores You Can Find

Eldon Square is home to many popular shops. Some of the biggest and most well-known stores, often called "anchor tenants," include:

The shopping centre also has main entrances to other very popular stores:

  • Marks & Spencer: This is one of the most successful Marks & Spencer stores outside of London. Its food hall is especially popular.
  • Fenwick: This is the main store and head office for the Fenwick chain. It is one of the largest department stores in the UK.
