Hayne Constant (born September 26, 1904 – died January 12, 1968) was an important English engineer. He was an expert in mechanical and aeronautical engineering. Hayne Constant played a big role in developing jet engines during World War II. His work helped make airplanes much faster and more powerful.
Early Life and School
Hayne Constant was born in Gravesend, England. His father was a dental surgeon. Hayne went to several schools as he grew up.
He studied at King's College Choir School Cambridge. He also attended King's School, Canterbury and Sir Roger Manwood's School. Later, he went to Queens' College, Cambridge for his higher education.
Constant's Engineering Career
After finishing his studies at Cambridge in 1928, Hayne Constant started his career. He joined the Royal Aircraft Establishment (RAE) in Farnborough. The RAE was a special place where new aircraft technologies were researched.
Constant worked there for six years. He then moved to Imperial College. In 1936, a scientist named Henry Tizard asked him to return to the RAE. Tizard wanted Constant to help develop new turbine engines. These engines were designed by another engineer, A. A. Griffith.
Developing Jet Engines
Hayne Constant led the building of several new engines based on Griffith's designs. This work was very important for the future of aviation. From 1944 to 1946, he was the head of research at Power Jets (R&D). This company was key in developing early jet engines.
Later, from 1948 to 1960, Constant was the director of the National Gas Turbine Establishment. This was a major center for gas turbine research. His hard work was recognized in 1963. He received the Gold Medal from the Royal Aeronautical Society. This award was for his amazing contributions to gas turbine technology.
In 1964, he became the Chief Scientist for the Royal Air Force. He worked at the Ministry of Defence. Hayne Constant passed away in 1968 at the age of 63.
