Haywood Mall is a large shopping mall in Greenville, South Carolina, United States. It is the biggest mall in the state, with over 1.2 million square feet of space for stores. The mall opened on July 30, 1980. You can find it where Haywood Road meets I-385.
Haywood Mall has several main stores, also called anchor stores. These include Belk, Dillard's, J. C. Penney, and Macy's. There used to be a Sears store, but it is now empty.
The Mall's Beginning
Plans for Haywood Mall started in 1978. A group called Haywood Mall Associates announced the mall would have four main stores. The first three stores confirmed were J. C. Penney, Sears, and Rich's.
Both J. C. Penney and Sears already had stores in Greenville. They decided to close those older stores and move into the new mall. The mall was planned to open in March 1980. The fourth main store was Belk-Simpson. They also moved from their old downtown Greenville location to the new mall.
In August 1979, another store called Meyers-Arnold announced they would open a 20,000 square foot store at Haywood Mall. This store was planned to be near the Sears.
Opening Day and Changes
Haywood Mall officially opened its doors on July 30, 1980. The main stores were Belk-Simpson, Rich's, Sears, and J. C. Penney. Meyers-Arnold also opened as a smaller main store.
Meyers-Arnold was later bought by another company in June 1987. It changed its name to Uptons. However, the Uptons store at Haywood Mall did not stay open for long. It closed on April 2, 1988. The empty space where Uptons used to be was then changed into a new food court for the mall.
In 1995, Dillard's moved its store from McAlister Square Mall to Haywood Mall. To make space for Dillard's, a new part of the mall was built. This new section led to the new Dillard's store, which had three levels.
More recently, on February 6, 2020, Sears announced it would close its store at Haywood Mall. The Sears store officially closed in April 2020.
