Kids Encyclopedia Facts

Head of Devil's River is a special place in Texas, where the Devils River meets Pecos Canyon. This spot is about 1,722 feet above sea level, which is quite high! It's located below Beaver Lake and is about nineteen and a half miles upstream from where the Devils River is crossed for the second time.

This area was very important a long time ago because it was part of the historic San Antonio–El Paso Road. This old road was a key route for travelers and goods moving across Texas.

The Historic San Antonio-El Paso Road

The San Antonio–El Paso Road was a major route in early Texas history. From the Head of Devil's River, the road turned northwest. It stretched for about 44 miles, crossing several natural features like Johnson Draw, Government Canyon, and Howard Draw, until it reached Howard Springs.

Journey to Fort Lancaster

After Howard Springs, the road continued for another 30.44 miles to Live Oak Creek. Just 3 miles further from Live Oak Creek, travelers would arrive at Fort Lancaster. This fort was an important military outpost located near the Pecos River. It helped protect travelers and settlers in the area during the 1800s.
