A Look Back in Time
The Battle at Jeddore Harbour (1722)
In July 1722, a group of Abenaki warriors tried to cut off supplies to Annapolis Royal. This was the capital of Nova Scotia at the time. They captured many fishing boats and their crews. These events happened between places like Yarmouth and Canso.
To protect the capital, the government in Nova Scotia took some Mi'kmaq people as hostages. Also, the area of Massachusetts declared war on the Abenaki.
During a conflict called Dummer's War, two captains, John Eliot and John Robinson, were sent to protect the fishing areas. They also aimed to get back the captured boats and prisoners. Captain Eliot made a surprise attack on a ship at Winnepang, which is now called Jeddore Harbour.
There was a two-hour battle on the water. Captain Eliot and some of his men were badly hurt. Five of his men died. Captain Eliot then threw a hand grenade onto the ship where the warriors were. Some warriors died in the explosion. Others tried to swim away but were shot. In total, 35 warriors were killed. The New Englanders rescued 15 prisoners. They found out that nine prisoners had been killed. The other 16 prisoners had been sent to Richibucto, New Brunswick.
Captain Robinson also captured ten boats and killed many Abenaki warriors. He later arrived at Malagash harbour. There, warriors held five more fishing boats and 20 prisoners. Captain Robinson paid a ransom, and these prisoners were set free.
Complaints at Jeddore (1753)
In 1753, the Mi'kmaq people living in West Jeddore had a problem. They complained that English fishermen were taking supplies that the government had given to them.
