Headlands Beach State Park is a popular public beach located in Mentor and Painesville Township, Ohio, in the United States. It is known for being the longest natural beach in Ohio. Every year, about two million people visit this park to enjoy its sandy shores and beautiful views.
At the eastern end of the park, you'll find a large wall called a breakwall. This structure helps protect the shoreline and is a favorite spot for people who enjoy fishing. You can also see the Fairport Harbor West Breakwater Light lighthouse there. Besides the beach, the park offers fun activities like hiking trails, a playground for kids, and picnic areas where families can relax. Next to the park is the Headlands Dunes State Nature Preserve, which protects special sand dunes.
Exploring the Park's Location
Headlands Beach State Park is easy to find because it's at the very end of State Route 44. This road is also part of the Buckeye Trail, a long hiking path that goes across Ohio. The park sits between two important natural areas: the Mentor Marsh and the Grand River. It is also located near the Fairport Harbor Coast Guard station and a local Morton Salt mine.
Why Headlands Beach is Special
Headlands Beach has received several awards and recognitions for being a great place to visit. CNN once listed Headlands Beach as one of the top 20 beaches in the entire United States. This honor came from nominations by readers of "CNN Travel." Also, back in 1995, a major newspaper called The Cleveland Plain Dealer named Headlands as the best beach in Ohio.
