Architect Alejandro Bustillo

The Headquarters of the Bank of the Argentine Nation (also known as Banco Nación Casa Central) is a huge and impressive bank building. It stands right next to Plaza de Mayo, a very important square in Buenos Aires. This square is where the city of Buenos Aires first began, and it has been the site of many big historical events in Argentina.

A famous Argentine architect named Alejandro Bustillo designed this building. He used a Neoclassical style, which means it looks grand and classic, like ancient Greek or Roman temples, with some ideas from French buildings. The building is super big, covering a whole city block, and it was officially opened in 1944. It even has a giant dome that is 50 meters (about 164 feet) wide! Because of its importance, the building is a National Historic Landmark.

Building's History

The Bank of the Argentine Nation's main building is located in the San Nicolás neighborhood of Buenos Aires. It sits on the very spot where the first Teatro Colón (a famous opera house) used to be. The Argentine government bought this theater building in 1888. Later, they decided it would be the main office for the new national bank.

In 1910, another architect named Adolfo Büttner updated the building to make it work better for the bank. But then, in 1938, Alejandro Bustillo came up with a plan for a much bigger building. This new design was for a massive 100,000 square meter (about 1.1 million square feet) structure. It was built in two main parts between 1940 and 1955.

What's Inside the Building?

Besides being a bank, this amazing building is also home to the Alejandro Bustillo Art Gallery. This gallery was started in 1971. The building also has a special museum that shows off historical items and old coins (this is called a numismatic museum).
