Edward Heathcote Williams was an important person in New Zealand's history. He was born on March 23, 1859, and passed away on November 28, 1931. He worked as a lawyer and a farmer. He was also a very important leader in the sport of cricket in New Zealand.
Heathcote Williams: Early Life
Heathcote Williams grew up in a big family. He was one of 11 children! He had eight brothers and three sisters. His parents were John William Williams and Sarah Busby.
His father, John William Williams, was a politician in New Zealand. This means he helped make important decisions for the country. Heathcote's grandfather, Henry Williams, was a missionary. Missionaries are people who travel to teach about their religion. Henry came to New Zealand in 1823.
His other grandfather, James Busby, was also very important. He was the "British Resident" in New Zealand. This was like being a special representative for Britain. James Busby arrived in New Zealand in 1833. One of Heathcote's brothers, Kenneth, also became a politician.
Heathcote went to Auckland Grammar School for his education. After school, he worked at a bank in Wellington for three years. Then, he started training to become a lawyer. This training is called being an "articled clerk." In 1881, he moved to Napier.
Cricket Leadership in New Zealand
Heathcote Williams played only one professional cricket match. This type of match is called a first-class game. He played for the Hawke's Bay team in 1891-92. In that game, he was the captain of his team. His team won against the Taranaki team by a lot. Even though he didn't play many games, he became one of the most important cricket leaders in New Zealand.
He was the president of the Hawke's Bay Cricket Association for a very long time. He held this job from 1892 until he passed away in 1931.
In 1894, a big meeting was held in Christchurch. Twelve people from different parts of New Zealand came together. Heathcote Williams was there as a representative for Hawke's Bay. He led this important meeting. At this meeting, the New Zealand Cricket Council was created. This council helps organize and manage cricket across the whole country. Heathcote Williams was chosen as the very first president of this new council. He served as president of the Council eight different times!
