History of Hecelchakán
Early Beginnings
Hecelchakán was founded a long time ago, between the years 1500 and 1600. It was built near a cenote, which is a natural pit or sinkhole filled with water. The first people to live here came from an older city called Xkalumkin.
Important Events and Growth
Many important events happened in Hecelchakán. For example, there was a battle here between Don Francisco de Paula Toro and a group called the federalists, led by Don Felipe Montero. Don Felipe Montero's group was defeated.
By 1840, the area around Hecelchakán was quite large. It included several other towns like Pomuch, Pocboc, Tenabo, Tepakán, San Antonio Sahcabchén, Dzitbalché, Bécal, Nunkiní, and Calkiní. A few years later, around 1846, the district of Hecelchakán had three main church areas: Hecelchakán, Calkiní, and Bécal.
Becoming a City
On December 7, 1915, a new law was passed. This law made Hecelchakán one of the eight independent municipalities in the new state of Campeche. This change officially started on January 1, 1916.
Later, in 1957, Hecelchakán was officially given the title of a "city." This was done by the Governor of Campeche at the time, Alberto Trueba Urbina.
