Heherson "Sonny" Turingan Alvarez (born October 26, 1939 – died April 20, 2020) was an important politician from the Philippines. He worked to make the Philippines a better place. He was known for his strong support for the environment.
He served in both the House of Representatives and the Senate. These are like the two main parts of the country's law-making body. He also held important jobs in the government's top team, called the Cabinet. He was the Secretary of Agrarian Reform and the Secretary of Environment and Natural Resources.
As a young person, he was an activist. This means he worked to bring about political or social change. He stood up for what he believed in, even when it was difficult.

A Champion for the Environment
Heherson Alvarez was often called "Mr. Environment." This was because he cared a lot about protecting nature. When he was the Secretary of Environment and Natural Resources, he worked hard to keep the Philippines clean and green.
As a senator, he helped make April 22 "Earth Day" in the Philippines. Earth Day is a special day when people around the world focus on protecting our planet. From 2010 to 2016, he also worked as a leader for the Climate Change Commission. This group helps the Philippines deal with changes in the Earth's climate.
Early Life and Education
Sonny Alvarez studied at the University of the Philippines. He earned a degree in liberal arts there. Later, he went to Harvard University in the United States. At Harvard, he earned a master's degree in Economics and Public Administration. This education helped him understand how to manage public money and government.
Standing Up for Democracy
In 1971, Heherson Alvarez was a young activist. He took part in a special meeting to write a new constitution for the country. He refused to sign a new constitution that would have allowed the president to stay in power longer.
Because of his strong beliefs, he and his family had to leave the Philippines. They went to the United States. While he was away, he helped organize a group called the Free Philippines movement. This group supported leaders who wanted a more democratic government.
He returned to the Philippines in 1986. This was after a big change in the government. He helped rebuild the country. He then won a seat as a senator. He served two terms, from 1987 to 1998.

Heherson Alvarez was married to Cecile Guidote. She is an artist and an activist. They had two children together, Hexilon and Herxilla.
His Passing
Heherson Alvarez passed away on April 20, 2020, in Manila, Philippines. He died due to complications from COVID-19.
