Heiner Geißler (born March 3, 1930, died September 12, 2017) was an important German politician. He was a member of the Christian Democratic Union (CDU) party. He also served as a federal minister from 1982 to 1985.

Early Life and Education

Heiner Geißler was born Heinrichjosef Georg Geißler in Gleisweiler, Germany. He studied law and philosophy at universities in Munich and Tübingen. He finished his studies and graduated in 1960.

Political Career Highlights

Serving Rhineland-Palatinate

From 1967 to 1977, Geißler was a minister in the government of Rhineland-Palatinate. During this time, he helped create the first law about kindergartens. He also started the state's first welfare stations. These stations helped people in need.

Federal Minister for Health

From 1982 to 1985, Geißler worked as a federal minister. He was in charge of the Ministry for Youth, Family, and Health. This ministry looks after the well-being of young people and families. During his time, the ministry had to deal with a situation called the Austrian wine scandal. This involved wine that was not safe to drink.

Secretary General of the CDU

From 1977 to 1989, Geißler was the Secretary General of the CDU party. This was a very important role. He helped plan the party's strategies and ran election campaigns. Many people believed he played a big part in Helmut Kohl becoming the Chancellor in 1982. He worked to keep the CDU as a balanced, middle-ground party.

Later Political Roles

Geißler stayed a member of the German parliament, called the Bundestag, until 2002. He represented his home state of Rhineland-Palatinate. From 1991 to 1998, he was a deputy chairman for the CDU/CSU group in parliament. He also served as Vice-President of the Christian Democrat and People's Parties International from 1986 to 1993.

After leaving parliament, Geißler became known for helping solve disagreements. He often worked as an arbitrator in arguments about wages and other issues.

Political Views

Geißler's political views changed over time. In the early 1990s, he was seen as a conservative politician. However, he later became more left-leaning on topics like social policy and globalization.

In 2007, he announced he had joined the Attac network. This group supports taxing financial transactions to help citizens. He said his decision was related to the upcoming G8 summit that Germany was hosting.
