Odin rides to Hel
"Odin Rides to Hel" (1908) by W. G. Collingwood.

Hel is one of the nine worlds in Norse mythology. It is a place where many of the dead go after life, especially those who did not die bravely in battle. The ruler of this world is the goddess Hel.

Where is Hel Located?

Hel is found deep under the roots of the giant tree called Yggdrasil. To reach Hel, you must cross a dark river named Gjöll. A bridge stretches over this river, and it is guarded by a powerful giantess named Modgudr.

Who Guards Hel?

Besides Modgudr at the bridge, a fierce dog named Garm guards the entrance to Hel's castle. Garm allows the souls of the dead to enter, but he makes sure that no one can ever leave. A rooster is also said to be a companion to Garm. This rooster's job is to wake the dead souls when the time comes for Ragnarök, which is a big event in Norse mythology.
