About Helen Lempriere
Helen Lempriere was born in a suburb of Melbourne, Australia, called Malvern. This was on December 12, 1907. She was the only child of Charles Algernon Lempriere and Dora Elizabeth Octavia Mitchell. Interestingly, her mother, Dora, was the younger sister of the famous singer Nellie Melba.
Her Early Life and Art Training
Helen went to school at Toorak Ladies' College in 1925. After finishing school, she decided to study art. She learned from two different teachers. First, she received lessons from A. D. Colquhoun. Later, she continued her art training with Justus Jorgensen. These lessons helped her develop her unique artistic style.
Her Amazing Artworks
Helen Lempriere created many important artworks. One of her famous paintings is Conception totenism, which she made in 1956. This painting used themes inspired by Indigenous Australians. You can see this painting at the Art Gallery of New South Wales.
After Helen passed away, her husband donated many of her other artworks. These included more paintings and prints. You can find these pieces in the collections of the National Gallery of Australia. Some of her works are also kept at the Grainger Museum at the University of Melbourne.
