Helen Moore (mathematician) facts for kids

Kids Encyclopedia Facts

Helen Elizabeth Moore is an American mathematician who uses her math skills to solve real-world problems, especially in health and medicine. She started her career teaching math at universities. Now, she works for a big pharmaceutical company called AstraZeneca, where she uses a special type of math called control theory to help create better ways to treat diseases by combining different medicines.

Early Life and Education

Helen Moore grew up in Charlotte, North Carolina. Her interest in math started because of her grandfather, who was an architect. For her last two years of high school, she went to a special school focused on science and math, called the North Carolina School of Science and Mathematics.

After high school, she attended the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill. She first studied physics but then switched to mathematics. While there, she even started a math competition club for students!

She later earned her Ph.D. (a high-level university degree) from Stony Brook University. Her studies focused on differential geometry, which is a branch of math that looks at shapes and spaces using advanced tools. Her Ph.D. research was about understanding special kinds of curved surfaces. Helen often found herself as the only woman in her math classes, both in college and graduate school.

Career in Mathematics

After finishing her Ph.D., Helen taught math at Bowdoin College. She also spent some time teaching at Stanford University. While at Stanford, she became very interested in how math could be used to understand and model diseases.

She then became an Associate Director at the American Institute of Mathematics. During this time, she also continued to help and guide other women who wanted to work in science, technology, engineering, and math (often called STEM fields) at Stanford.

Later, Helen moved from working in universities to working in industry. She worked for Bristol-Myers Squibb and then for AstraZeneca, where she uses her math skills to help develop new medicines and treatments.

In 2016, Helen Moore was chosen to be part of the leadership team for a big group called the Society for Industrial and Applied Mathematics (SIAM). This group focuses on how math can be used in real-world jobs and industries. As of 2023, she also serves as the Vice-Chair for SIAM's group that focuses on life sciences.

Achievements and Recognition

In 2018, the Society for Industrial and Applied Mathematics honored Helen Moore by naming her a "Fellow." This is a special recognition for people who have made a big impact in their field. She was recognized for using mathematical modeling to make a difference in areas like:

  • Oncology: The study and treatment of cancer.
  • Immunology: How our bodies fight off sickness and diseases.
  • Virology: The study of viruses.

She was also honored for her work in mentoring (guiding and supporting) others, teaching, and being a strong leader in the field of mathematics.
