Education and Career Path
Helena Bonet Rosado studied at the University of València. She earned her doctorate, the highest university degree, in 1993. Her studies focused on archaeology and the ancient history of her home region.
In 1999, she began working at the Prehistory Museum of Valencia. She started as the head of the Prehistoric research department. Because of her hard work and expertise, she became the Director of the museum in 2005.
Discoveries in Iberian Archaeology
Helena Bonet has made many important discoveries about the Iberians. Her research helps us understand how these ancient people lived.
How Iberian Society Was Organized
Bonet worked with other archaeologists to study Iberian towns. They looked at how settlements in the Valencian Community were connected. They discovered that some large towns, called oppida, were more powerful than smaller villages. This suggests the Iberians had a well-organized society with leaders and main centers.
Understanding Iberian Pottery
Bonet is also an expert on Iberian pottery. She helped create a system to classify different types of pottery. This system helps other archaeologists identify the pots they find. It tells them if a pot was for everyday use or for special occasions.
The Ancient Capital of Edeta
One of Bonet's biggest projects was studying an ancient site called Edeta. Today, this place is known as Tossal de Sant Miquel, near the town of Llíria. Bonet's research showed that Edeta was likely the capital city of a large Iberian kingdom.
She found evidence that Edeta was a huge city for its time. It had large houses, special workshops for making pottery, and was protected by watchtowers. This discovery changed how historians see the power and importance of the Iberian people.
Excavating Iberian Forts and Settlements
Bonet has led excavations at many other Iberian sites. She explored Puntal dels Llops, a small fort on a hilltop. She also studied smaller settlements like La Seña and Castellet de Bernabé. More recently, she has researched the major town of La Bastida de les Alcusses. Each site gives new clues about Iberian life.
The Role of Women in Iberian History
Bonet has also done important research on the lives of women in Iberian society. She wanted to make sure their stories were not forgotten. In 2006, she helped create a special museum exhibition to share what she learned about Iberian women.
