Heliamphora chimantensis facts for kids

Kids Encyclopedia Facts

Heliamphora chimantensis is a special kind of marsh pitcher plant. It is found only in one specific area, the Chimantá Massif in Venezuela. This plant has been seen on mountains called Apacará and Chimantá Tepui.

About the Chimantá Marsh Pitcher Plant

The Heliamphora chimantensis is a unique plant. It is a type of pitcher plant, which means it has leaves shaped like pitchers. These pitchers help the plant catch insects. This plant is only found in the Chimantá Massif region of Venezuela.

Where It Lives

This plant grows in a special place called the Chimantá Massif. This area is in Venezuela. It has flat-topped mountains known as tepuis. Heliamphora chimantensis has been found on Apacará Tepui and Chimantá Tepui. These are high, isolated places where many unique plants and animals live.

What Makes It Special

Scientists believe that Heliamphora chimantensis is more closely related to two other pitcher plants, H. tatei and H. neblinae. These two plants grow further south. This is interesting because H. chimantensis lives in the Gran Sabana region, but it is not as closely related to other pitcher plants found there.

One way scientists compare these plants is by looking at their anthers. Anthers are parts of a flower that hold pollen. Most other pitcher plants in the Gran Sabana have about 10 to 15 anthers. However, H. tatei, H. neblinae, and H. chimantensis all have around 20 anthers.

There is a difference, though. The anthers of H. tatei and H. neblinae are longer, about 7 to 9 millimeters. But the anthers of H. chimantensis are shorter, only reaching about 5 millimeters in length. These small details help scientists tell the different species apart.
