Helmer is a small, quiet place in Latah County, Idaho, in the United States. It is known as an unincorporated community. This means it's a group of homes and buildings that isn't officially a town or city with its own local government. Instead, it's part of the larger county.

History of Helmer

Helmer started to grow when a railroad line was built through the area. Railroads were super important back then for moving people and goods across the country. When the railroad reached Helmer, it helped the community to form and develop.

In 1907, a post office was opened in Helmer. A post office is where people send and receive mail, and it was a really important part of daily life for communities before the internet and cell phones. Having a post office meant Helmer was becoming a more established place. However, the post office closed down in 1929, perhaps as the community changed or people moved to larger towns.

Over the years, the number of people living in Helmer has changed. In 1909, it was thought that about 50 people lived there. By 1960, the population had become smaller, with only about 30 people calling Helmer home.
