Early Life and Learning
Helmut Bakaitis was born in Dresden or Lauban, Germany. This area is now part of Poland. His parents were from Lithuania and were leaving their home country at the time.
Helmut spent his first five years in special camps in Germany and Austria. These were called UN transit camps, where families stayed while waiting to find new homes. His father worked as a translator there.
In 1950, when Helmut was six, his family moved to Australia. They first lived in special centres for new arrivals. His father, who was a smart academic, wanted to be a teacher. But he had to dig sewers to earn money for the family.
Helmut went to Fort Street High School in Sydney. He won a scholarship to attend, which meant he got financial help for his studies. He was sometimes bullied at school. To escape this, he spent a lot of time reading books and learning about languages, movies, and acting.
He started his own drama group at school. He acted in and directed school plays. He even began to write his own plays. At 16, he left home and worked as a stenographer (someone who types fast using shorthand) while still studying.
Helmut won another scholarship, this time to the National Institute for Dramatic Art (NIDA). This is a famous school for actors and directors. While at NIDA, he started his own theatre company with friends. NIDA supported their group, and they even toured one of their plays. Before he finished his studies in 1965, he got his first professional acting job in Hobart.
Career in Theatre and Film
After NIDA, Helmut worked for seven years with the Melbourne Theatre Company. He was an actor and also led workshops for young people. He then worked with other theatre groups like the Old Tote Theatre Company and the Sydney Theatre Company. He also helped direct a youth festival in Adelaide.
Later, he went to England to study Drama and Education. While there, he set up youth programs in London.
When he returned to Melbourne, he became the first artistic director of St Martins Youth Arts Centre. An artistic director helps decide which plays are performed and guides the creative vision. He worked there for five years. After that, he directed the New Moon Company in Cairns for three years.
Back in Sydney, he directed the Q Theatre in Penrith for seven years. Then, he became the Head of Directing at NIDA for nine years until 2007. After that, he taught directing at the Australian Academy of Dramatic Art (AADA), which is now called AIMDA.
