Plot
The story of Happy Feet takes place in a colony of Emperor Penguins. Here, every penguin needs to sing a special song called a "Heartsong" to find their true love. Two penguins, Norma Jean and Memphis, fall in love because of their beautiful songs. They soon start a family.
While Norma Jean is out fishing, Memphis is left to watch their egg. He accidentally drops it on the cold ice, which makes the egg very cold. The little penguin chick that hatches from this egg is named Mumble. He has a terrible singing voice and later finds out he has no "Heartsong" at all. But Mumble has a secret talent: he is an amazing tap dancer!
Mumble's mom, Norma Jean, thinks his dancing is cute. However, his dad, Memphis, says it's "just ain't penguin." Both parents worry that without a "Heartsong," Mumble might never find love. Mumble's best friend, Gloria, happens to be the best singer in the colony. Mumble and Gloria have been close since they were chicks. But Gloria finds it hard to understand Mumble's strange "hippity-hoppity" ways.
Mumble is just too different for Noah the Elder, who is the strict leader of the colony. Noah the Elder eventually tells Mumble to leave the community.
Away from home for the first time, Mumble meets a group of different penguins called the Adelie Amigos. Their leader, Ramón, and the other Adelies quickly accept Mumble's tap-dancing skills. They invite him to party with them. In the Adelies' home, Mumble asks for advice from Lovelace the Guru. Lovelace is a Rockhopper penguin who says he can answer any question for the price of a pebble. During their talk, Lovelace mentions "aliens." This makes Mumble curious, especially after he finds a frozen vehicle stuck in a glacier. He decides he needs to find these "aliens."
Mumble and his new friends return home. They find Gloria at the center of attention because her "Heartsong" is very attractive to other penguins. But Gloria isn't interested in the other males' songs. She gets excited when Mumble convinces her to sing along with his tap-dance rhythm. Soon, other penguins become interested and start dancing too.
However, Noah the Elder believes that the recent lack of fish, which is the penguins' main food, is a punishment from their god. He thinks it's because they allowed Mumble's dancing. So, he exiles Mumble from the colony. Before Mumble leaves, he tells them he will find the real reason for the famine.
Mumble, Lovelace, and the Amigos travel many miles. They face many dangers, including an attack by killer whales. Finally, they see many commercial trawlers, which are large ships fishing in the Antarctic waters. Mumble follows them. Eventually, he gets caught and is put on display in a marine park exhibit. He tries to talk to the "aliens" (which are humans) around him, but he can't.
After almost going crazy from being stuck, a small child taps on the glass of his enclosure. Mumble gets excited and starts tap-dancing. A large crowd gathers to watch him. Because of this, he is released back into the wild with a tracking device. He then leads the humans back to his colony.
Later, a research team arrives to study the penguins. The humans discover they have been overfishing the ocean, which caused the lack of fish. Fishing in the Antarctic is then banned. The fish population returns and grows strong. In the end, the Emperor Penguins and the Adelie Amigos are shown dancing and celebrating together.
