Helmut Griem (born April 6, 1932 – died November 19, 2004) was a famous German actor and director. He worked in films, on television, and on stage.
Helmut Griem's Acting Journey
Helmut Griem was born in Hamburg, Germany. He started his career mainly as a stage actor. He performed in many well-known theaters. These included the Thalia Theater and the Deutsches Schauspielhaus in Hamburg. He also acted at the Burgtheater in Vienna and the Munich Kammerspiele. Later, he joined the Staatstheater am Gärtnerplatz in Munich.
Griem became famous around the world for his role as the SS-officer Aschenbach in the movie The Damned (1969). One of his most famous international roles was in the Academy Award-winning film Cabaret (1972). In this movie, he played Baron Maximilian von Heune.
He also appeared in other movies like The McKenzie Break and Ludwig. On television, he was in the mini-series Peter the Great. He played Alexander Menshikov, who was a close friend of the Tsar.
Later in his career, Griem started directing plays. He directed Long Day's Journey Into Night by Eugene O'Neill. He had also planned to direct another play before he passed away. Helmut Griem won the Bambi Award twice, in 1961 and 1976. This award is a big honor in Germany for people in media and entertainment.
He died in Munich in 2004 when he was 72 years old.
