The next year, she received the National Communal Harmony Award for promoting peace among different groups.

Her Early Life and Work

Hema Bharali was born in Assam, a state in Northeast India. She belonged to the Chutia community. From a young age, she wanted to help others.

She joined the fight for India's freedom from British rule. When a terrible earthquake hit North Lakhimpur in 1950, she was there to help with rescue and relief work.

Joining the Bhoodan Movement

In 1951, Hema Bharali joined the Bhoodan movement. This movement was started by Vinoba Bhave. Its goal was to get rich landowners to donate land to poor farmers. Hema Bharali became an important leader in this movement.

She worked with Vinoba Bhave to help people in Tezpur after a war. She even stayed at Bhave's ashram (a spiritual retreat) during these efforts. She also took part in Padayatra, which are long walks to spread the message of the Bhoodan movement. She helped create the Central Social Welfare Board (CSWB).
