Fun Places to Visit in Tezpur
Tezpur has many exciting places for visitors to explore.
- Agnigarh: This is a hill by the Brahmaputra river. Legend says it was where Princess Usha was kept safe. She was the daughter of King Banasura. Usha fell in love with Aniruddha, who was Lord Krishna's grandson. The hill was surrounded by fire, which is why it's called "Agnigarh." This means "hill of fire" in Sanskrit.
- Bamuni Hills: Here you can find old ruins with beautiful sculptures. These sculptures are from the 9th and 10th centuries AD. It's like stepping back in time!
- Bhomoraguri: This spot has a stone carving made by an Ahom General named Kalia Bhomora Borphukan. He planned to build a bridge over the Brahmaputra river here. Almost 200 years later, a bridge was finally built at this exact spot. It is named after the great general. The bridge is 3.015 kilometers long. It connects Silghat in Nagaon district with Tezpur.
- Chitralekha Udyan (Cole Park): This lovely park was created in 1906 by a British officer named Cole. It has two huge, decorated stone pillars. There are also other old stone carvings. The park was updated in 1996. You can enjoy water sports, walk on nice paths, eat at a restaurant, and see shows on an open-air stage.
- Hazara Pukhuri: This is a very large man-made lake. It was dug in the early 9th century. It is named after King Harjar Varman.
- Mahabhairav Temple: This is an ancient temple located north of Tezpur city. Legend says King Bana built it. It originally had a Siva lingam, which is a symbol of Lord Shiva. The temple was first made of stone. The building you see today is made of concrete. Ahom kings gave land and hired priests to take care of the temple.
- Padum Pukhuri: This lake has a small island in the middle. The island has been turned into a park with a musical fountain. You can reach the island by crossing an iron bridge. Visitors can also go boating on the lake.
- Rudrapada Temple: This temple is on the east side of Tezpur, by the Brahmaputra river. People believe that Rudra (who is Lord Shiva) left the print of his left foot on a stone here. The story says that Lord Mahadeva showed his true self to King Bana at this place. King Siva Singha built the temple in 1730. However, the main temple was later washed away by the Brahmaputra river.
- Trimurty Udyan: This park is next to Borpukhuri. It is named after three important people in Assamese culture. They are Rupkowar Jyoti Prasad Agarwalla, Kalaguru Bishnu Prasad Rabha, and Natasurjya Phani Sarmah.
