Hemilienardia albostrigata is a tiny sea snail that lives in the ocean. It is a type of mollusk, which is a group of soft-bodied animals. This snail is also a gastropod, meaning it belongs to the same class as all snails and slugs. It is part of the Raphitomidae family of snails.
About This Snail
What It Looks Like
The shell of the Hemilienardia albostrigata snail is quite small. It can be anywhere from 3 mm to 8 mm long. That's about the size of a small bead or a grain of rice!
The shell usually looks whitish or light yellowish-brown. It often has a special mark on its back: a pure white band that looks like chalk. Sometimes, this band might be broken up with brown spots.
This snail's shell is shaped like a tower, and it's mostly white. It has a noticeable brown spot on its back, just below the top part of its body. The shell has whorls, which are the spiral turns of the shell. These whorls are a bit swollen and have ridges running along them. They are also crossed by a few clear lines called lirae.
The opening of the shell has a thick outer lip. This lip has large bumps, called denticles, on its inside surface. The central part of the shell's opening, called the columella, also has small teeth-like bumps.
You can tell this snail apart from a similar species, Hemilienardia apiculata, because Hemilienardia albostrigata has that brown spot on the edge of its body whorl.
Where It Lives
This marine snail lives in the ocean waters near New Caledonia and Queensland, Australia.
