Henderson Glacier is a large river of ice located in Antarctica. It is about 7 nautical miles (13 km) long. This glacier is found in the Enterprise Hills, which are part of the Heritage Range.
Where is Henderson Glacier?
Henderson Glacier is in a part of Antarctica called Ellsworth Land. It flows towards the northeast. The glacier starts near two peaks named Schoeck Peak and Hoinkes Peak. It then joins a larger glacier called Union Glacier, just east of Mount Rossman.
How Was Henderson Glacier Discovered and Named?
Scientists and explorers have mapped many parts of Antarctica. Henderson Glacier was mapped between 1961 and 1966. This mapping was done by the United States Geological Survey. They used information from ground surveys and aerial photos taken by the United States Navy.
The glacier was named by a special group called the Advisory Committee on Antarctic Names. They chose to name it after Felix E. Henderson. He was a meteorologist, a scientist who studies weather, for the United States Antarctic Research Program in 1965. He worked at a place called Eights Station in Antarctica.
