Discovering Hennessey's Past
Hennessey is named after Pat Hennessey, an Irish freighter. A freighter was someone who transported goods using wagons. Pat Hennessey was killed near where the town is now in April 1874. It's believed he was killed by either Native American Cheyenne tribesmen or white horse thieves.
You can find the Pat Hennessey Memorial Park at Iowa and Arapaho streets. This park remembers him. Pat Hennessey was first buried in a shallow grave where he died. People passing by would place rocks on his grave to mark it. Later, his body was moved, possibly by his family from Ireland. His remains are not at the Memorial Park site today.
How Hennessey Began
The town of Hennessey was officially planned after the famous land run on April 22, 1889. A land run was an event where people raced to claim land in new territories.
